MUNICIPALITY OF EDREMIT

The Municipality of Edremit (Turkey) is one of the co-founders of the Associazione Rotta di Enea and the coordinator of its Strategic Committee of Local Authorities.

The City of Edremit, which hosts the archaeological site of Antandros, is one of the main partners of the Council of Europe-certified Cultural Route, Aeneas’ Route, and since 2017 it has been carrying out intensive work to disseminate the Aeneas myth as a shared cultural heritage between Europe and Turkey.

The Municipality of Edremit is a member of the ALDA network – European Association for Local Democracy and for the admirable results achieved in the field of local democratic policies and promotion of local cultural heritage at European level, it received the proposal to establish the first Agency of Local Democracy of Turkey (LDA Edremit) within the ALDA network connected to the Council of Europe and the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe. In Edremit, on 15 October 2021 the Memorandum of Understanding of the LDA Edremit (Local Democracy Agency of Edremit) in which ALDA is partner together with other local, national, and international members, was signed.

In 2020, the Municipality of Edremit received the “Diploma of Intermunicipal and Interregional Partnership” from the Congress of Regional and Local Authorities of the Council of Europe for its role as active partner in the development of local democracy in Europe and its engagement in the ALDA network.

The City of Edremit has in fact been awarded five times – in 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021 and 2022 – the title “Partner of the European Local Democracy Week” as part of the celebrations for the European Local Democracy Week developed by the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe. In addition, the City was awarded, in 2018, the European Diploma and in 2019 it was the only Turkish city to obtain the prestigious Council of Europe Flag of Honour award, followed in 2021 by the Plaque of Honour, conferred by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.
